Restless Legs Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Red River Sleep Center Restless legs syndrome is a type of neurological disorder. It is considered a movement disorder and a sleep disorder. Restless legs syndrome can cause uncomfortable sensations deep within the calves or thighs. The sensations may feel like creeping, burning, crawling, itching, or tugging. You may have the urge to move your legs to relieve the symptoms. You may experience symptoms when you rest or sit for long periods of time. Restless legs syndrome can cause similar symptoms in the arms and other parts of the body. Movement may provide temporary relief of symptoms, but you may be unable to sleep until your symptoms go away.

About 80% of people with restless legs syndrome also experience periodic limb movement disorder. Periodic limb movement disorder is characterized by sudden involuntary and repetitive leg-jerking, twitching, or kicking at the onset of sleep and during sleep. Periodic limb movements may occur every 10 to 60 seconds and possibly hundreds of times during the night disturbing you and your bed partner.

Both restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder can cause excessive daytime drowsiness and reduced daytime functioning. A sleep study and evaluation at Red River Sleep Center can help diagnose these conditions. We offer expert treatment, which may include medication, stretching, exercises, and lifestyle changes.
